Engineering and Technology research students who are investigating multi-disciplinary approaches eg. AI/ML with market/business/product design

Format of Masterclass

Through the traditional topics of “Research Methodology”, covering theory, lit review, methodology, contribution and publication, Irene Ng takes you through a unique Masterclass on the lessons she has learnt through her career as an academic, practitioner and entrepreneur publishing in sociology, economics, marketing, information systems, operations and business journals; using examples from papers she has published over 20 years. She covers the essential understanding of the knowledge claimed by an academic and why research methodology underpins the credibility of that knowledge and when it matters to whom.

Irene will not only cover the knowledge and understanding of research, but its politics, the funding landscape and career trajectories through her experiences as a social scientist with more then £20m funding portfolio across EPSRC and ESRC research councils, as well as investment capital.

Irene will also talk about creating “rainbow connections” – industry, governmental and academic funding collaborations – lessons she learnt through her advisory, consultancy and investment practices assisting organizations in health, defence, shipping, and digital economy over the years and how they have developed her theoretical sensitivities as an academic while creating impact in practice.

Finally, Irene talks about the evolution of the modern academic in an AI-driven, digital, multi-disciplinary and multi stakeholder era and how to take advantage of the opportunities to push the boundaries of research and practice to become better in both.
